BUILDING A LEADERSHIP TEAM

~ by Robyne Beaubien

If you have been called to begin a Women's Ministry at your church you may not know of any other women who share your calling or you may be part of a group of women who are raring to go! Whatever your situation, the first place to being is with prayer. I know, everyone says that! But really, there are a lot of choices to make and the place to begin is on your knees before the Lord. Everything has a way of coming together when the Lord's direction has been sought from the beginning.

If you are establishing a WM team you will be looking for women to serve with you. As you pray about who God has for your team you will want to be ready to ask questions of each candidate. Some questions you might include:

What are you passionate about?
Are you really available to serve?
Why do you want to be a team member?
What gifts has God equipped you to serve with?

When recruiting a team, you want to be sure that each woman is "on the same page" with the WM goals and the overall ministry vision. Things such as coming in late to meetings or being only partially passionate will hinder the ministry. This calls for a firm commitment of time and talents.

A quick word about terms of service. I know that a lot of WM around today have leadership that serve for a one year term. Personally, I think this can hinder the growth and vision of a ministry. The bottom line for me is that it is about God's calling on our lives. If God has called you to an area of service in your church, you should be there until He moves you. Okay! Moving on...

It is also important to have a team of leaders with different personalities, gifts and passions for ministry. Some of the "types" of people that are assets to a team would be.

  • A Visionary - someone who sees everything the ministry could be in 10 years. Could also be a bit of a dreamer who has fresh ideas for ministry.
  • A Shepherd - a leader with a heart for people, who cares about what is being taught, who is teaching, what the results are.
  • An Administrator - a leader who gets things done. Usually has good follow through and attention to details.
  • An Encourager - a cheerleader. One who is enthusiastic and reminds people that our strength is in the Lord.
  • A Worker - similar to the administrator in their get-it-done giftedness, this person is not interested in being in charge but will get things done. A great planner and doer.
  • A Prayer Warrior - you will know her when you meet her. She will be the foundation in your team who will always be in prayer for the ministry and encourage others to pray over everything.

These are just an idea of how different women will bring different treasures to your team. There are women that have combinations of these gifts. Be sure to have a team of diverse gifts and ages. For desciptions and tasks for your team to oversee, see the job descriptions page.

Did you know that women make up over 70% of the church today?

I once heard another WM leader say that the primary reason women are involved in WM is PURPOSE! Give them a purpose, a reason, to be involved. As a leader, try to involve as many women as possible in your ministry. The more women involved in the WM, the more your church will grow. This is an example of how a WM can affect the overall ministry of the church.

"Jesus had a great team in His disciples. He empowered them to do awesome things that would bring glory to God. The idea that He empowered them and sent them out to do ministry is the same idea we should adopt in our leadership strategy. Multiply your leaders to build your ministry team, and watch God work." - Linda
